MegaFon to launch 3G network in Sochi on February 6

MegaFon North Caucasus announces commercial launch of 3G network in Sochi on February 6 2009. Sochi is the largest resort region in Russia stretching for 147 km along the Black Sea coast of the Krasnodar region and includes the Krasnaya Polyana mountain resort area. In 2014 Sochi will be the host of XXII Olympic Winter Games. Sergey Kharchenko, deputy director general of MegaFon North Caucasus, says: «Since January 2008 3G network was operated in Sochi in trial mode. The first test was successfully carried out during international space bridge Krasnaya Polyana – Courchevel. Afterwards, 3G test zones were deployed on the territory of the ski resort and in so called В«Big SochiВ» (municipal region around the Sochi which territory 3,5 times bigger than the city).»

Data transfer rate of the «third generation» network can reach 3.6 Mb/sec.
