Handset sales can decrease by 25% in Russia

Experts predict that handset sales in Russia can decrease 25-30% by the end of 2009 to 24 mln. items, reports Russian newspaper Kommersant. Fall in consumer demand, rouble weakening against dollar and euro, as well as actual rejects of banks to give out credits for mobile handsets purchases, will lead to replacement purchases get back to three-years-ago level.

According to Mobile Research Group (MRG) forecasts, in Russia number of handsets sold in retailer stores in 2008, reached 32 mln items. Euroset, the largest mobile retailer in Russia, reports that in 2007 it sold 32.45 mln mobile phones (in 2006 – 29.3 mln. handsets). It means that for the first time handset market in Russia stagnated.
