  • Russian MTS got Opera Mini special- Opera Software today announced that MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, will now provide a co-branded version of the Opera Mini browser for its subscribers, who will be able to download it on their mobile phones at mini.opera.com. Subscribers of MTS will get access to a customized Opera Mini start page when they download the browser on their mobile phones.

    The start page will have default bookmarks which give MTS subscribers quick and easy access to music, videos and games as well as giving users the opportunity to purchase content directly from the browser.

  • Out There Media and MTS partner for mobile advertising in Ukraine- Out There Media, the international leader in Mobile Advertising, announces the signing of a partnership agreement with MTS, a leading mobile operator in Ukraine with a customer base of 17.74 million mobile subscribers and a 32% market share. The agreement enables MTS to offer targeted Mobile Advertising, through Mobucks™, the multi-channel Mobile Advertising marketplace technology developed by Out There Media. Out There Media is also responsible for monetization, sales, business development and operations support, within the partnership agreement. It is estimated that Out There Media now has access to more than 40 million mobile phones in Ukraine, which corresponds to over 80% of the country’s total mobile subscriber population.
  • TOP 10 Russian content-providers for 3Q 2009 – MTS rating - MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has resumed publication of its content-providers ratings and published the rating of content-providers for third quarter of 2009. Top 5 companies in the rating are A1, IncoreMedia, Inform-Mobil, i-Free, and Neva Line.

    In its ratings MTS takes into account the income its partners get from offering their content-services to MTS subscribers. The presented rating should help in informing about situation in content services market and current position of largest Russian content-providers.

  • Mobile flat-rate data plan for Russia- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has made unlimited internet access available for all subscribers signed up to MTS Connect (meaning that this flat-rate can be use only with MTS branded USB-modem) data plan in all regions of Russian Federation. Pavel Roitberg, product director, MTS, says: “As 3G networks, launched by MTS in 43 cities of Russia, are developing, mobile web access is becoming a bulk service among our subscribers […]”.
  • MTS amends EUR 300 million credit facility- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, announces that it has successfully renegotiated the terms of the EUR 300 million credit facility from Gazprombank as part of the Company's efforts to reduce the interest rates of its debt portfolio. MTS initially entered the credit agreement with Gazprombank in late December 2008. Under the terms of the agreement, the Company was to pay an annual interest rate of 12%. As the result of negotiations, the interest rate has been decreased to 8%. The maturity of the facility has been extended by more than a year from June 2011 to September 2012. MTS has already paid down EUR 50 million of the original facility.
  • MTS rolls out BlackBerry service for Russian regional subscribers- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has announced the launch of BlackBerry service, end-to-end solution for safe remote access to corporate email on BlackBerry smartphones for companies which operates outside Moscow and Moscow region. When subscribing to the service, company gets BlackBerry smartphones. MTS sets up company's servers and mail client connection. Monthly payment for unlimited BlackBerry service is 590 rubles (about 20 dollars). First time BlackBerry email service was introduced in Ukraine in October, 2007, when MTS rolled out BlackBerry enterprise service. In June 2008, MTS launched BlackBerry email service for enterprise users in Russia. Today the service is used by 500 large companies in Russia.
  • VivaCell-MTS rolls out 3G network in all Armenia regions- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has announced the full-scale roll out of UMTS/HSPA (3G) network in all regions of Armenia, one of the CIS countries. Today the third generation network is operating in 50 cities of the country. First VivaCell-MTS 3G networks were launched in April 2009 in three major Armenian cities – Yerevan, Gyumri, and Vanadzor. The carrier is building a combined 2G/3.5G network in Armenia, using the current platforms as base stations without holdup or significant reconfiguration of GSM network.
  • MTS acquired Teleforum for 11 million dollars - MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has announced 100% acquisition of mobile phone retail chain Teleforum from its earlier owners EWINSER INVESTMENT S.A. (BVI) and a private individual. The deal totaled 11 million dollars 20% of which the seller will get with the closing of the deal and 80% will be paid out after 12 months subject to fulfillment of several agreement terms, including the compliance of the performance figures of the acquired company with the deal's requirements.
  • MTS to build LTE network in Uzbekistan - MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has announced that MTS Uzbekistan, 100% subsidiary of JSC Mobile TeleSystems, received authorization from Uzbekistan Communication Agency for using the existing company's frequency range in building LTE network in Uzbekistan.
  • MTS rolls out mobile video service Smotri Online on its WAP portal- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has announced the launch of special section on its WAP portal wap.mts.ru dubbed MTS Smotri Online (means « Watch Online» in Russian), which can be used not only for downloading video content but also for watching online video without downloading the content on mobile phone. Smotri Online is a new section on WAP portal of the carrier, developed together with Next Media Group based on Amfora's hardware platform. The section will substitute all current video service on portal. Smotri Online offers wide range of videos in different genres including music clips, comedy shows, popular cartoon episodes, movies, sport broadcasts and user-generated video.
  • MTS secures additional funding- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has successfully secured financing from Sberbank through two loans in the amount of RUB 47 billion and RUB 12 billion. The loan of RUB 47 billion boasts a maturity in September 2013 with an annual interest rate of 16%. The funds will used for MTS' overall investment programs, including funding of the SPV for the pending acquisition of a 50.91% stake in COMSTAR-UTS, a leading supplier of integrated telecommunication solutions in Russia and the CIS. The closing of the COMSTAR-UTS transaction is anticipated for October 2009.
  • Colibria Interconnects MTS Mobile Instant Messaging with Megafon and Beeline- Colibria, in partnership with Acision, the world's leading messaging company, today announced that it has enabled Russia's largest operator, MTS, , to interconnect its 'Chat' Mobile Instant Messenger (MIM) service with MegaFon and VimpelCom (which operates under the Beeline trademark). This allows subscribers of the three operators to seamlessly exchange messages across their respective services. The new service, which will be jointly branded as 'Chat' across all three networks, builds on year-on-year growth in messaging for MTS since 2008. This trend is expected to continue by the expansion of messaging access across Russian subscriber communities.
  • MTS rolls out 3G in Khabarovsk – 1GB of data for free- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has announced test launch of 3G network in Khabarovsk. Any MTS subscriber in Khabarovsk can now test carrier's 3G services. When MTS 3G network is commercially launched, 3G features will automatically become available to all MTS subscribers in the city. Users can get a test SIM card with 3G service subscription and free 1GB data at any MTS store in Khabarovsk. Also those who want to use high speed internet features in mobile 3G networks should have a handset or a dongle with UMTS/HSDPA support and be in MTS 3G network coverage area. MTS 3G network provides theoretical maximum download rates up to 3.6 Mbs.
  • MTS rolled out 3G network in Perm- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, announced commercial launch of the first 3G network in Russian city Perm covering the business center of the city and airport Bolshoye Savino. Perm is a city and administrative center of Perm Krai, Russia. It is situated on the banks of the Kama River, in the European part of Russia near the Ural Mountains. Perm's 2007 estimated population was 990,200. Users of MTS 3G network in Perm can use mobile internet at speeds up to 3.6 Mbit/s. MTS is the first operator to roll out 3G network in Perm. MTS 3G subscribers in Perm will be able to make video calls free of charge till September 12, 2009. In addition, from September 4 to September 12 MTS 3G subscribers can use free bundles of internet data. Subscribers signed up to MTS Konnekt and MTS Konnekt-2 data plans will get 100 Mb of internet data in 3G network. Subscribers of other popular data plans will get 30 Mb of 3G data.

  • MTS launches its 3G network in Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, announced commercial launch of 3G networks in largest cities of Kuznetsk Basin – Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk. Now when 3G networks are rolled out MTS subscribers in Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk can use mobile internet with speeds up to 3.6 MBit/s. Subscribers who want to use 3G services should have a 3G handset, subscription to GPRS service and stay in MTS 3G network coverage area. Registration of users in 3G network is automatic and free of charge.
  • MTS to Acquire 50,91% of COMSTAR-UTS- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, announces that the boards of directors of MTS and Sistema JSFC («Sistema» – LSE: SSA), the largest public diversified financial corporation in Russia and the CIS, have approved the acquisition by an MTS subsidiary of a 50.91% stake in COMSTAR – United TeleSystems («COMSTAR-UTS» – LSE: CMST), a leading supplier of integrated telecommunication solutions in Russia and the CIS, from Sistema.
  • MTS launched 3G network in Orenburg - MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has announced commercial launch of its 3G network in Orenburg. Orenburg is a city on the Ural River and the administrative center of Orenburg Region in the Volga Federal District of Russia. It is situated 1,478 km southeast of Moscow, very close to the border with Kazakhstan. Its population is 542,700 (2005 est.). At its launch 3G network covers the central part of the city where most offices, administrative buildings and institutions of higher education are located. By the end of 2009 MTS plans to broaden the network coverage up to 100% of the city territory. 3G technology provides data transfer rate up to 3.6Mb per second.
  • MTS launched 3G network in Saratov region- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has announced the commercial launch of 3G networks in two Russian cities Saratov and Engels. MTS 3G network covers all areas of the two cities and provides data transfer speed up to 3.6 Mb per second. Subscribers who want to use data transfer service in MTS 3G network in Saratov region need to have a 3G enabled handset or they have to be signed up to MTS GPRS service and have PCMCI/USB-modem.

    When a subscriber buys «MTS Connect» package (which includes USB-modem and a special data plan «MTS Connect-2»), the subscriber gets 600 Mb of web traffic for free. The free traffic is given out by 100 Mb packages each month during six months since service activation.

  • MTS launches location-based service «Love Compass» for its dating WAP-portal - MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has launched a new location-based service dubbed «Love Compass» for users of its dating WAP-portal wap.mtsdating.ru. «Love Compass» will help MTS subscribers registered on the portal wap.mtsdating.ru search for other users by their location or find out current whereabouts of their friends. Now users' profiles at the dating service wap.mtsdating.ru contain a link «WHERE?» that lets users search other portal users signed up to the service «Love Compass» by their location and get information on how far from himself or herself this user is at the moment. Also, users can send each other SMS, write emails or invite to the chat.
  • MTS Eyes Purchases in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, is eyeing possible acquisitions in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, its Chief Executive Officer, Mikhail Shamolin said in an interview with the Reuters news agency. "There are two countries (where) we are not present yet and I believe we should be present, which is Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan," Shamolin told Reuters Financial Television on the sidelines of St Petersburg Economic Forum. He said that the company was not holding specific talks with any Kazakh or Azeri firms.
  • MTS teams up with Nokia to market Nokia N97- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, and Nokia signed the memorandum of understanding on the direct delivery of Nokia devices to MTS' retail network. The first joint project of the two companies will be the priority sales launch of Nokia N97, Nokia's flagship mobile computer, equipped with exclusive software from MTS. The agreement signed by MTS and Nokia at the 2009 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum provides for the direct supply of Nokia products to MTS' retail network, joint marketing campaigns to promote Nokia's handsets and a special training program for MTS' retail employees.
  • Russian mobile VAS market reached $856.2 mln in 1Q09- As estimated by consulting company AC&M Consulting, gross revenue of Russian mobile value added services market in the first quarter 2009 reached 856.2 million US dollars (29041.7 million roubles). In the fourth quarter 2008 revenue was 994.9 mln dollars (27124.7 mln. roubles). In roubles the revenue grew since 4Q08 by 7.1%, but in dollars it decreased in 1Q09 by 13.9%. Mobile VAS ARPU in the fourth quarter fell to 1.5 dollars from 1.8 dollars in 4Q08. In roubles ARPU grew by 6.7% from 47.9 roubles in 4Q08 to 51.1 roubles in 1Q09. Mobile VAS share in the general revenue of operators in 1Q09 increased up to 17.7% from 15.1% in 4Q08.
  • First 3G network launched in Moscow- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has launched the first phase of its 3G network in Moscow. The operator is following a strategy of covering the largest business and shopping centres with HSDPA networks. The first indoor network was launched in Moscow's Expocentre, one of the largest exhibition centers in Eastern Europe. MTS has covered the whole Expocentre exhibition space with and HSPA network, providing customers with data download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbit/s. MTS is planning to launch additional 3G networks in the 35 largest business and shopping centers in Moscow in 2009, including the Domodedovo International Airport. MTS will also launch indoor 3G networks in the offices of the largest corporations based in Moscow. 3G services will also become available in several cities in the Moscow region, including Noginsk and Orekhovo-Zuyevo.
  • MTS Slumps to Q1 Loss on Foreign Exchange Losses- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has reported that its first-quarter revenues dropped by 24% to US$1.8 billion, due to local currency depreciation and seasonal factors. The company also reported a net loss for the quarter of $57.7 million, compared to a profit of US$610 million a year ago. The loss was due to US$462.4 non-cash foreign exchange losses through US GAAP translation of US dollar-denominated debt.

    Mr. Mikhail Shamolin, President and CEO of MTS, commented: "In spite of the volatile macroeconomic situation in Russia and the CIS, MTS demonstrated year-over-year revenue growth in national currencies in all of its markets of operation with the exception of Ukraine, where growth dynamics were inline with the market's overall performance. The changes in the foreign exchange rates impacted our US dollar-denominated results that led to a decline in the Company's main US dollar-based financial indicators, however, the stable financial position of MTS allows us to continue to execute on our business development strategy."

  • MTS has chosen Nokia Siemens to provide its subscribers with the secure mobile internet- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, has recently announced its decision to work with Nokia Siemens networks on a turnkey security application that seeks to ensure secure internet browsing for its subscribers in both GSM and 3G networks. This application is expected to be fully operational by mid 2009. Along with its subsidiaries, MTS has a subscriber base of over 91.77 million customers. The circles wherein MTS are licensed operators have a total population of over 230 million. The security solution provided to MTS is expected to sieve through general packet radio service (GPRS) and 3G traffic on the roaming interface, and in the process effectively guarding the MTS network from hackers and security breaches.
  • MTS launched 3G trials in Moscow- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, announces that it has initiated the testing of outdoor 3G radio coverage in Moscow. The goal of the trial is to confirm the possibility and conditions of joint operation of outdoor 3G radio coverage and radio electronic means of military application. The trials are to be finished by June 2009. Also, MTS informed that it has received expert findings from Main RF Center confirming the possibility of using base 3G stations in the buildings and houses of Moscow, as well as in the subway and Moscow region. Particularly, expert report defines the parameter the base 3G stations should have, concerning their power, height and antennas' direction. The findings will allow MTS to get permission for commercial launch of 3G network in the mentioned area and begin offering 3G services to its customers.
  • MTS ranked in the World 100 most powerful brands with a brand value of $9.2 billion- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, announced that it has been named as one of the BRANDZв„ў Top 100 Most Powerful Brands, a ranking published by the Financial Times and Millward Brown, a leading global market research and consulting firm. For the second year in a row, MTS joins the ranks of the most powerful brands in the world with a value of $9.2 billion at the 71st position. As in 2008, MTS is the most valuable Russian brand in the ranking and one of the 10 most valuable telecoms brands in the world. MTS brand has risen 18 spots to become the 71st most powerful brand globally with a value of $9.2 billion, up from $8.1 billion in 2008.   • MTS and Ericsson launch renovated Mobile WAP Portal- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS countries, and Ericsson announced the launch of Mobile WAP Portal wap.mts.by based on Ericsson Mobile Services Delivery Platform (MSDP). By entering renovated Mobile Portal, MTS Belarus subscribers get an opportunity to acquire quickly and in a simple manner various content (pictures, ringtones, games), manage personal account, change tariff plans, etc.
  • MTS and Sicap Team Up to Offer Dynamic SIM Services in Belarus- Mobile network operator, MTS Belarus is to launch a SIM upgrade which will continuously display a PrePay customer's balance on their mobile phone display. The service is being provided by Sicap. Real time information is enabled by connecting a Sicap over the air SIM applet to the MTS call billing server. As such, each call is immediately debited from the account balance and the updated remaining credit displayed. MTS and Sicap says that they will also explore a number of similar SIM-based service opportunities which could include dynamic screening of preferential call rates, special offers or credit top-up alerts.
  • MTS Launches 3G in Armenia- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, announces the commercial launch of its 3G network in Armenia, one of the CIS countries. MTS launches today the first UMTS / HSPA 3G network in Armenia in the three largest cities of the country: Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, Guymri and Vanadzor. The network will be expanded to additional cities during 2009. The next-generation network will deliver faster data download speeds through the advanced UMTS / HSPA technology, enabling such innovative services such as video calling, and increase capacity to handle usage growth.
  • MTS added 0,4 mln subscribers in March 2009- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, announces that its consolidated subscriber base reached 92.19 million users on March 31, 2009. During March, MTS consolidated subscriber base increased by 0.4 million subscribers with 280 thousand subscribers added in Russia. MTS owns a 49% stake in Mobile TeleSystems LLC, a mobile operator in Belarus, which is not consolidated.
  • Largest Russian carriers offer IM-service «Chat» - the first joint product of «the great three»- VimpelCom (which operates under the Beeline trademark), MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS and MegaFon have announced the launch of their joint service «Chat» in all regions of Russia. The service allows subscribers of «the three great» with almost any handset model to send and receive instant text messages unlimitedly. Incoming messages appear in the application window in a dialogue mode, so users can track the history of conversation and feel more comfortable while communicating. Subscribers can also use special icons (emoticons) and manage their status in the chat that allows invite those who are free for chat, and leave alone those who are busy.
  • Mobile internet in Russia increased to 1 billion dollars and 31.2 mln users in 2008- ComNews Research has published a report about Russian mobile internet market in 2008 and has made its forecasts for 2009. In 2008, mobile internet (data services) was one of the most fast-growing value-added services segment for Russian mobile network operators. This growth was stimulated by further deployment of 3G networks, increase in the number of mobile internet users and consumed data. After economic conditions began crumbling, mobile web has become the most important countermeasure to ARPU decrease. The main results of Russian mobile internet market in 2008 are as follows:

  • MTS to sell BlackBerries to individuals within two weeks in Russia- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, plans to begin selling BlackBerry phones to individuals in the country within two weeks as communications companies compete for wealthy customers. «It's a niche solution, oriented toward the high-value segment that is interested in innovations and wants mobile e- mail,» Irina Osadchaya, a spokeswoman for the Moscow-based company, said today. «We want to bolster their loyalty.» The BlackBerry, which can send e-mail and surf the Web, is made by Canadian company Research In Motion Ltd., based in Waterloo, Ontario.
  • MTS and MySpace launched mobile portal- MTS, the largest cellular network operator in Russia and CIS, and social networking site MySpace have announced the launch of their mobile portal. Mobile version of MySpace site is now localized for Russian users and integrated with MTS WAP portal wap.mts.ru. From now on portal users will be able to upload photos, and use communication services at any time with more convenience. Mobile portal uses MySpace blue color scheme and is branded with MTS logo. Portal user interface, which is optimized for screens with resolution at least 176 pixels wide, allows setting configuration for uploading photos to Internet via email.
  • MTS Acquires Eldorado Mobile Retail Chain in Russia- MTS, the largest mobile network operator in Russia and the CIS, announces that it has acquired a 100% stake in Eldorado Centre LLC and Eldorado Communications Store LLC from Tenteco Limited (Cyprus) and Kilcherex Holdings Limited (Cyprus). MTS has acquired a 100% stake in the Eldorado mobile phone retail chain for $22.85 million of which $5 million will be paid after 12 months should the retail chain satisfy certain performance criteria.
  • MTS claims its mobile advertising is 10 times more efficient than conventional ads- MTS, the biggest Russian and CIS mobile network operator, reports that its mobile advertising projects turned out to be a real success with click-through rate (CTR) in several advertising campaigns reaching up to 11%. Five per cent of those who received a message eventually bought the advertised product or sign up to the advertised service.

    Currently advertising messages are delivered to more than 260,000 MTS subscribers. About 200,000 of those who opted-in for receiving the ads are using MTS-Sponsor service, and more than 60,000 have signed up for the advertising messages delivery. Eighty per cent of these subscribers have responded to the operator's offer of signing up to this advertising service. The rest 20% of those who signed up for the service, found out about it from other sources.

  • MTS Launches a CDMA Network in India- Russian backed Indian mobile network operator, Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) has launched its CDMA network Tamil Nadu, Chennai and Pondicherry, under the MTS brand. The company outlined plans for a US$5 billion investment over the next five years, and expects to list on the local stock-exchange by the end of next year. The firm is controlled by Russia's Sistema, which has built up a 73 percent stake in the Indian operator. Sistema also controls the Russian and CIS operator, MTS and licensed the brand to be used in India last year.
  • MTS Uzbekistan Orders Interconnect Billing Platform- Polystar OSIX, a supplier of OSS/BSS solutions, has announced that MTS Uzbekistan has placed an order with it for Interconnect, Network and Service Performance Management. Under the terms of the agreement, MTS Uzbekistan will deploy Polystar Interconnect Peering Assurance, Network and Service Assurance solutions to cover legacy, as well as GPRS, VoIP and UMTS technologies. Jupiter's Crystallizer module will enable users to work with the visualisation techniques and have an instant access to usage and performance information for voice, messaging and data services from the customer and network perspectives.
  • MTS subscribers base grew to 91.77 mln in February 2009- MTS, the largest mobile networld operator in Russia and the CIS, announces that its consolidated subscriber base reached 91.77 million users on February 28, 2009.   • J'son & Partners: 190.4 mln registered SIM cards in Russia as of February 2009- J'son & Partners reports that in February 2009 the number of registered SIM cards in Russia reached 190.4 million. Penetration rate in Russia increased to 134%, in Moscow region – to 185%. Compound subscribers base increased by 1.1 million (0.56%) in February 2009. During February 2009 monthly subscribers base growth decreased by 44% since February 2008. During last 12 months compound user base of Russian operators increased by 23.9 mln. subscribers, or 14%. In March 1, 2009 MegaFon took the first place in growth figures – its subscriber base grew by 7 mln.   • MTS Uzbekistan launches mobile TV trial- MTS Uzbekistan, 100% subsidiary of JSC Mobile TeleSystems, announces that it has initiated a trial launch of mobile TV service.

    The service operates in UMTS 3G network and is based on the TV services license issued by Uzbek Communication and Information Agency. MTS Uzbekistan together with Uzbekistan National Television and Radio Broadcasting Company has started broadcasting two channels «Uzbekistan» and «TV Markaz» in trial mode.

  • Russian Government May Be Preparing to Take Stake in Indian Operator- The Russian government is reported to be preparing to take an indirect stake in an Indian mobile phone network, local media reports have suggested. According to a copy of the government budget, Russia has set aside 23.7 billion rubles "for acquiring shares in the joint venture Shyam Telelink," - a new Indian mobile phone network. A source close to the deal told Kommersant the funds would go to buying a 20 per cent stake in Sistema Shyam TeleServices The firm is controlled by Russia's Sistema, which has built up a 73 percent stake in the Indian operator. Sistema also controls the Russian and CIS operator, MTS. The newspaper reported that the deal would enable Sistema to retain a majority stake in the Indian operator, and Russia would buy the shares as part of a plan to settle New Delhi's outstanding Soviet-era debt to Moscow.

  • Top managers of Svyaznoy mobile retailer chain to lead MTS retail network- MTS signs a management agreement with the majority shareholder of the Svyaznoy group of companies, Maxim Nogotkov, that assigns a team of top managers from Svyaznoy to supervise MTS retail network. The three-year agreement provides for the transfer of Svyaznoy management expertise in running mobile retail networks, including business practices, IT solutions and other skills critical for the effective development of the MTS retail network. RTK CJSC, a company wholly owned by MTS, will be charged with managing MTS retail network. National telecoms group Svyazinvest holds 38 percent of Rostelekom's share capital and 50.67 percent of its voting stock.   • iPhone weak sales in Russia - During first three months of official iPhone sales in Russia there were sold no more than 120 - 180 thousand devices. According to some analytics, during 4Q there were shipped even less - only 89,000 iPhone 3G devices. Taking into account that the three largest operators in Russia obliged to buy 3.5 mln iPhones from Apple in the next three years, 1.5 mln of the phones go to VimpelCom (to be purchased in two years) and 1 mln goes to MTS (to be purchased in three years), reported anonymous operators' managers. According to MegaFon's report for 3Q08, the operator is to buy 1 mln iPhones from Apple during two-years timeframe.   • Russian mobile operator MTS hit by $50 mln back tax claim- Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), Russia's largest cell phone operator, said on Tuesday it had received back tax claims totaling 1.13 billion rubles (around $49 billion). The Federal Tax Service's claims on the company for 2005-2006, including penalties and fines, relate mostly to inter-operator settlements, MTS said. The company intends to challenge the tax claim in a court of law. The Tax Service has filed similar back tax claims for VimpelCom, Russia's second largest cell phone company operating under the Beeline brand, and Sonic Duo, a subsidiary of mobile operator MegaFon.

  • MTS Ukraine ordered protection from fraud- Israeli fraud management firm, ECtel says that it has won a contract for its IRM solution for MTSs' operations in Ukraine. This first-time order from MTS, valued at several million US dollars, was awarded to ECtel following a competitive tender.   • MTS to invest 38 bln rubles in 3G networks by 2011- MTS plans to invest 38 bln rubles ($1.545 bln) into the development of infrastructure for 3G networks till 2011, while additional 35 bln rubles ($1.423 bln) will be invested into the development and implementation of telecommunication applications till 2020, RBC reports. MTS explains that the company plans the amount of investment on the forecasts for 3G services development within the coming five years. Thus, by 2013 the broadband penetration in Russia is forecasted to grow by 50% from the current 10%.
  • MTS completes redemption of $400 million Eurobond- Mobile TeleSystems OJSC ("MTS" - NYSE: MBT), the largest mobile phone operator in Russia and the CIS, today announced the redemption of its $400 million Eurobond which matured on January 30, 2008. The bond was redeemed using the Company's own cash and available financing activities. Coupon payments for the entire period, including the last coupon, which took place simultaneously with the issuance of repayments, amounted to $195 million. The Eurobond was issued in January 2003 in the amount of $400 million with a semi-annual coupon rate of 9.75%.
  • MTS Connect: a user friendly solution for mobile Internet access- Mobile TeleSystems OJSC («MTS» - NYSE: MBT), the largest mobile phone operator in Russia and the CIS, today announced the launch of MTS Connect, a mobile Internet service solution, whereby subscribers will be provided with a modem for their desktop PCs or laptops and a special tariff.
  • MTS services offered in Chukotka- Mobile TeleSystems OJSC ("MTS" - NYSE: MBT), the largest mobile phone operator in Russia and the CIS, announced that it has increased its service portfolio using the GSM 900/1800 standard in the Chukotka region in the Far East of Russia. Currently, the Company's switching system in the region's capital Anadyr can service up to 300 thousand numbers. All of the equipment meets the requirements for working under the extreme climatic conditions of the Russian north.
  • MTS announces a new appointment- Moscow, Russian Federation - Mobile TeleSystems OJSC ("MTS" - NYSE: MBT), the largest mobile phone operator in Russia and the CIS, announces the appointment of Mr. Andrei Dubovskov as the new Director General of Business unit «MTS Ukraine.» Mr. Dubovskov, who is currently first deputy Director General of Business unit «MTS Ukraine,» will replace Mr. Pavlovsky and assume duties as the new head of MTS Ukraine. Mr. Pavlovsky accepted an offer to return to Moscow and become a senior manager of one of the Sistema companies.
  • MTS expands its share in Omsk daughter company to 100%- Within the strategy to consolidate minority stakes in its daughter companies MTS acquired a 9% stake in the Mobile Communication Systems (MCS) Open Joint-Stock Company from a private investor, the Fri-Consulting Limited company, for $16 mln. Finally, MTS stake in MCS reached 100%. MTS acquired a 51% stake in MCS in 2000, then in 2001 and 2004 it acquired 32.5% and 7.5%, relatively. MCS provides GSM-900/1800 mobile communication services in the Omsk Region and it is one of the leading operators in the region, whose population totaled 2.1 mln.
